If it's any consolation--I found this extremely confusing while reading
some App Server's docs as well. The spec allows for multiple instances
representing Bob, but some app servers don't support that. So you have
to check your specific app server to find out whether you will ever have
more than one instance representing Bob.
The conflicting reports probably come about because the spec says either
is ok, but each app server's docs will only tell you specfically what it
does about it.
