The manifest file is part of the Jar format, it doesn't have to describe the
content of the jar file when deploying. Regarding the format, it is
specified by the EJB spec 1.1 to be a XML file in a certain format described
by the that spec. I'm not certain that the 1.0 spec obligated the vendors to
use the .ser format but most did use this format (Correct me if I'm wrong).
