You can declare a class abstract eventhough there are no abstract methods, or for
that matter you can declare a protected constructor.

Exactly. What will happen is the concrete subclass when it gets instantiated will
follow
the normal semantics of Java object creation.

Personally all of our beans are CMP - waiting for ejb2.0 :-) - so I have not had real
heavy experience in CMP. I would assume it is vendor specific. Maybe someone with
some CMP knowledge will answer.
