Aren't these two statements contradictory?

I think the first one is incorrect and that you are indeed free to implement
findByPrimaryKey() whatever way you find appropriate as long as you return an EO
(or a PK if you're on the bean).

And to answer the initial request, and as correctly stated by Jean-Baptiste, you
only get the illusion that you are talking to a Singleton: the server is free to
service your request with different bean instances each time, possibly living on
different JVM's in a clustered environment (and by the way, Jean-Baptiste, WLS
does support this).
