Hi,
It is preferable to use CMP then BMP.
You can be forced to use BMP in the following cases
1. The columns to be mapped cannot be represented directly by java types
2. Mappings and no of tables used in Bean

However these and some other disavantages are being solved with new versions
of the app servers. So It also depends on which version of the appserver you
are using.

Conclusion :
It is always best to use CMP.
In non-trivial cases you may be forced to use BMP
