No reference I'm afraid, but I know from practical experience that JBOSS's
EJBHome objects (specifically those it provides to the Tomcat servlet
container)
are definitely not thread-safe. Since as you say, the spec is silent on the
subject, JBOSS is not in violation of the spec, so a portable client must
synchronise.

Incidentally, the "feels" right to me also, as client programs expect to
have to
deal with the consequences of multithreading if they use it.
