WebSphere handles that out of the box, if you follow this design:

Use session SLSB deployed with TX demarcation set to "requires new".
Define a method in the SLSB that issues the EJB QL call, loops through the
first X entity references returned by the iterator / enumerator. While
looping, use the each entity referense to get the data you want into a set
of VO/DTOs and return them to the caller.

The key is to access the iterator within a transaction.
