Hi Milko
It sounds like the mother is the Jewish half and she was not born in Elbing. Just to explain what is on the film - these are strictly vital records and/or police references to Jewish BMD only (at least these are the records I can best read!!), so since Charlotte was not born in Elbing, and had a Lutheran marriage, I am not expecting to find anything. If she died in Elbing, her death record would not be with the Jewish BMD since, again, I presume Johann is not Jewish. By this time period Jewish civil records were always kept quite separate from other records. Sometimes the rabbi is listed on the record. I am attaching the marriage record of my gg-grandparents Weinberg/Hahn, the (Weinberg/Goldstein) marriage record (from nearby Dirschau) of my ggg-grandparents and Jacob's death record - to give you an idea of what's on the film. As you can see, it's not easy reading this stuff! Nonetheless, I will be happy to keep a look-out for Charlotte. According to the marriage record she was Evangelian (or Lutheran if you will). It is said that she was half-jewish but it is unclear to me from what side so I don't know for what name to look. But it just may be Schikowsi. She won't of course not appear in the birth records but maybe there is some kind of reference to her or (the jewish part of her) family. The name Kretschmann - which she adopted when marrying my ggg-grandfather Johann Gottlieb Kretschmann - has nothing do with it. Sincerely, Milko. The records I am looking at are strictly Jewish records. I doubt they would contain records of mixed marriages. Schikowski doesn't sound too Jewish to me. Did Charlotte marry a Jew - Kretschmann? If she did not, her marriage record would not be in these records. If Kretschmann is Jewish, then maybe I can find it. The good news is the film is in good condition and the scribe had great handwriting! Thanks in advance. Sincerely, Milko Kretschmann. On Jul 25, 2010, at 4:15 AM, Judith Elam wrote: I am in the process of viewing the LDS film on Jewish records of Elbing. The quality of the film is good, even though I am not good at deciphering the old script, but getting better! I am attaching records regarding the death and identity confusion of my gggg-grandmother, Amalia, mother of Rebecka Goldstein Weinberg. Not only am I confused, but apparently so were the police in Elbing! I can see she was born in Danzig, that she died in October 1848 and that her father was Israel. But depending on the record you look at, it appears she was born Weinberg or Rosenthal. She was probably born around 1793, so that was before Jews had surnames. If indeed she was a Weinberg, that means that most likely Rebecka and her husband Jacob Israel Weinberg were first cousins, not unusual. Can someone please help me make sense of Amalia's identity? Also, as I have mentioned before, I am willing to help find records for other Elbingers of Jewish heritage after I get done with my Weinbergs, who I am beginning to see were a huge family. Rebecka & Jacob Israel had 16 children! So I will be viewing this film for some time to come. I was not able to find records for Jean Nicholas (surname - Fritsche) because Fritsche is too late for the film. First in line will be Fred Zimmak, but please let me know if you need look-ups.
