I had the same problem as you.  However, the K2 was GREAT on the air.  I
finally traced the problem to the fact that both were using the same power
supply (cured most of it) and to much transmit power - used a dummy load for
both the K2 and the 706 with the K2 at about 1 watt. As my XYL is a ham I
put the 706 in a different room, she listened and provided feedback on a HT.
It appears that even with the rigs on different power supplies (one on
battery) if they are close enough for you to control both they interact in
some way.
