Rubber bands sound good to me - being that I am cheap. A good source of some custom rubber bands is a bicycle intertube. Pick a size tube and just cut a section to meet your needs. I have used them to close HT battery packs that have been rebuilt. You can adjust the strength by changing the width of the section you cut. I can see cutting one about as wide as the knob is deep.
