Skip the fourescent and go for a daylight spectrum bulb in an articulating arm lamp. I use clip on magnifying lenses that clip to my reading glasses. For most a lot of the building activity I can look "under" the magnifying lenses to see through the reading glasses. When I need the magnification it's right there. No problems reading the numbers on those tiny glass diodes.
