What "fiber"?  Mine was a kit and the material was definitely felt washers (2 
in the kit).

I could never get the feel I wanted and didn't like the sound either. I 
replaced the washers with a single, larger homemade felt washer that just fits 
the recess in the knob and is glued in, so there is only one sliding surface. 
Just a tiny swish now and acceptable feel, hopefully without too much loading 
on the bearing(s) in the shaft encoder.

slight bit of noise as the knob rotates along the disk.  I've read
suggestions to use various other materials including felt.  When the
AF is up I don't even notice it.
