Well, I removed the knob and the felt washer... and just turning the shaft with my fingers I can hear the friction noise. Of course that is with the RX muted, computer off in a quiet shack. Maybe I have a bad encoder...

Yes. > I dont hear such noise on my old IC-746 The K3 uses a fiber disk to provide the friction. The result is a slight bit of noise as the knob rotates along the disk. I've read suggestions to use various other materials including felt.
