Even the MFJ-974, 974H, and 976 balanced line tuners use a 1:1 current balun on the input (http://www.mfjenterprises.com/man/pdf/MFJ-974.pdf ). I don't suppose that's all that bad a design compromise, though when these MFJ tuners were first announced I had hoped that we would see a modernized Matchbox design. There are plenty of the Johnson Matchboxes to be found at hamfests and on ebay. I found mine (the version rated for about 300 watts) at a small local hamfest a few years ago for $50.
