There was no way on God's Green Earth the DI at Fort Ord was ever going to
let me fire an M1 left-handed. 

And I didn't! 

Later I came to appreciate that when I saw a leftie get a series of hot
spent shell casing down the collar of his fatigue jacket. And I thought
having them bounce of the steel pot would have been the worst of it! 

Later I taught the M1 and was no more forgiving than my instructor.
