This is something I have noticed in contests recently, and just now in a qso with a strong local - after a few minutes, the audio becomes distorted, what we used to call a T7 note.
I have read about distortion caused by banging up against the audio limiter, but this happens even at very low audio output. I also have the impression that it does not occur when I first turn on the radio, and that when I'm transmitting a lot, in contests, it starts to happen earlier and earlier, sometimes emerging at the end of a brief contest QSO. Amp or no, makes no difference, and it appears to happen on all bands.
