I wonder if
the people on the list could point me to books, manuals, information concerning
the programming of PIC devices?

Lee,
Especially for the PIC18, 24 and 30 series, Mikael (OH2AUN), has put
together a nice s/w package, FlashForth.
It is available free on SourceForge.
http://sourceforge.net/projects/flashforth/

With the wealth of information provided by Microchip - free,
                                       MPLab from Microchip -- free,
                                       low cost development boards,
a programmer such as PICKit 2 or 3,
                           software such as FlashForth,
real time investigation of, and learning about, registers, bits, i/o,
etc. is fast and easy.
