FYI, I have a K3 without the KUSB option installed. I have a cheap USB to Serial adapter that I need for my PC that doesn't have a serial port.
I got curious about using PSK-31 with a waterfall display, so I used the adapter between the PC and the K3. Using HRD Beta version 5, I had Tx/Rx control problems intermittently with the best configuration I could find. From what I had read, I was convinced that the adapter did not have the FTDI chipset and was causing the trouble. I planned on buying a better adapter. Later, I happened to try DigiPan software. It works flawlessly with the cheap adapter. The configuration I am using in DigiPan caused the K3 transmit to flutter when using HRD.
