For all the youngsters out there, we used to have this conversation ad nauseum on the Ham bands back in the 1950's when "Appliance Operators" were sneered at - no matter that their rigs were Collins, Hallicrafters, National, etc., that usually worked much better than our home brew creations.
There was a lot of disagreement about whether a "kit" was "homebrewing" - E.F. Johnson, Heath, WRL and others were cranking out new kits almost monthly. There was even sentiment in some corners that it should be *illegal* for any company to sell kits, much less finished rigs to the Ham market. Some things never change, Hi!
