We interrupt this contest to bring you a very OT topic on the Elecraft List...
The Day the Earth Stood Still... A very well made film created by very talented professional filmakers! It was my senior thesis film in Cinema Production in college (Soap Opera production was my TV Production thesis to impress my then YL, now XYL ha ha!) One of my favorite parts is when the folks in the boarding house are listening to the news, and the scene cuts to Michael Rennie's silohuette dark against the door with the shadows from lights across the background. Then he walks into the light and is perfectly lit. An exquisitely crafted scene! This movie is extremely well made from a cinema craft standpoint, the reason it stands the test of time so well (the music is a bit cheesy with all the Therimin stuff, tho). The attention to detail paid to the props and background content (like the equations) is breathtaking for what was a rather simple journeyman studio production on a limited budget. The remake with Keanu Reves fell way short of the mark set by the original. Dont get me started on this film, I wont stop! Its been 37 years since I dissected it but it remains high on my list of favorites. The special effects hold up well and the story is interesting. I remember the first time I saw it but viewing it again was fun. I have always wondered about the damaged gift to the nations. Oh, and the mass of equations on the professor's blackboard? I stopped the movie on those frames and went through them. They were accurate descriptions of orbital mechanics. I am always annoyed when math is flashed on a screen in a movie and it is incorrect. I was pleasantly surprised when I worked through this blackboard's worth and found them accurate and entertaining. 73, Kevin.
