The KX3 (K3 Extremely Portable is how I think of it) does have 3db of additional power compared to the intended market: 5w QRP portable.
The portable QRP market is where Elecrafts' roots lie, after all, so it should be no surprise that the KX3 is aimed at that target. Having an optional external 100w amplifier makes it practical for field day and other mobile operations, too, and perhaps some really constrained home stations where even a small K3 will not fit.
