Unless you live in a very quiet area, you won't need a preamp, Jim. My K9AY is smaller than average and even with its lower sensitivity I have never needed an external preamp. In fact, I normally have the K3 internal preamp OFF on 80 and 160. Even use the attenuator or back off the RF gain sometimes.
