A year or so ago I had the same problem with #3727.   Looked to me like the 
brass insert was a bit too tight and stressed the knob.

No problem though since they promptly replaced it.

I guess the person you talked to wasn't familiar other replacements.

BTW, the replacement has been in service for about a year with no problems.
