The speakers Elecraft uses are very efficient. It's hard to beat them. The issue of the upward facing speaker was a big topic back when the K2/10 was first being shipped (ca 2000). Many people simply built a deflector that sat right on top of the rig over the speaker opening. Curious, I made one out of stiff paper and the results were great but I didn't need it since I use phones all of the time. Some fellows fabricated them out of pc board material (and then painted it) or even sheets of acrylic for a very neat looking deflector. Bits of rubber strip on the bottom edge keeps them from sliding off when the tilt stand is extended.
