Everybody has forgotten the AC/DC switch on the replies to this question.
It's so easy to overlook. The AC/DC-ness of the vertical amp is quite
important. If you have a 1 Vpp RF on a 350V (oops, empty-state device).

If you have a 1.5 Vp-p RF voltage on a 12V line (blocking caps on one or
both ends, I imagine), you can measure either. On DC, the trace would be
from 11.25 to 12.75 volts (probably 2 to 3 reticule boxes on the 5 v/div
setting), and you could see the center of the trace at 12 volts.

Flip the switch to AC, and the trace will jump down to centered on zero.
It's still only about a half unit tall. Switch the v/div up to 1 or .5, and
the whole screen fills with the AC part of the trace, and you can see if
it's 1.5 volts much more easily.

There should be a "Beam Finder" function to locate if the trace is way above
or way below the screen. Use this to get it somewhere visible, and then fine
tune the other controls.
