Hi Ed, Yes, you can use your K3USB cable to gain access to the RTS line, but you would have to select the optional KXSER cable (no charge exchange) to mate it to your KX3. Apparently there is space inside that DB9 connector to mount a small resistor and 2N2222 to change the HIGH RTS line to a short that can be applied to the PTT ring in the mic connector.
The GPIO approach will require a firmware change, and would require you to break out the RTS line anyway, and then splice into another connector too....I am sure there are others interested in doing this. I THINK this might be the easiest way, although perhaps it would be possible to add another stereo jack next to the mic connector to short for PTT....will have to see what the space issues look like inside the unit.
