If I remember correctly, the speaker is also very sensitive to distortion of its metal frame (and therefore cone) if you tighten down the nuts too much. You may have already tried this but try backing them off and readjusting them so they're "finger tight" and no more. If things rattle, tighten down a little more. Worth a try anyway.
