When the KX-1 is tuned to a frequency several KHz outside the ham band, the transmitter is automatically disabled and all you get is the sidetone when it is keyed. I think the display will say "Error" when keyed. Sorry I didn't make this clear before. I didn't mean to suggest that one should actually transmit outside the ham bands. When you get far enough outside the ham band that you get the "Error" message when keying, then you are not transmitting.
