I'm definitely not reaching the speaker's limits, as I can get very clean
output from it at even higher volume as long as I apply pressure to parts
of the case to dampen the vibration.

The speaker itself is no slouch.

I've got to do more checking on this mention of the "gap" so I can be sure
where it's supposed to be. It looks like the square mounting gasket is snug
right up against the enclosure at the moment but it's not clear to me if
that's where this gap is supposed to be. I expect a quick Internet search
will reveal the answer, so I'm off to do that.
