I have, at best, a gap over part of that area about 1/4" long. Toward both ends the top cover below the speaker is touching the bottom cover. There is a gap between each side the segment of the top cover and the bottom cover.
No detectable buzz or vibration here at any volume setting although I can feel considerable vibration when I touch the top or bottom covers. 73, Ron AC7AC -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Don Wilhelm Sent: Thursday, July 19, 2012 12:08 PM To: Andrew Moore Cc: Elecraft Subject: Re: [Elecraft] KX3 speaker: distortion from mechanical vibration? Andrew, The gap is between the top and bottom covers - turn the KX3 over and look at the bottom right below the speaker - you should see a gap between the bottom cover and the speaker mounting plate which is a part of the top cover. Use a piece of paper as a feeler gauge to be sure the gap is really a gap and not two pieces of metal touching each other. 73, Don W3FPR On 7/19/2012 2:48 PM, Andrew Moore wrote: > On Thu, Jul 19, 2012 at 1:14 PM, Don Wilhelm <[email protected]> wrote: > >> That small speaker - if driven to high volumes *will* distort - there >> is nothing that can be done about that. >> As far as the mechanical vibration, that is quite another thing. >> > I'm definitely not reaching the speaker's limits, as I can get very > clean output from it at even higher volume as long as I apply pressure > to parts of the case to dampen the vibration. > > The speaker itself is no slouch. > > I've got to do more checking on this mention of the "gap" so I can be > sure where it's supposed to be.
