Gold gets goop from the air on it. Very small particles of cooking grease over a long period of time. Soot from cigarette smoke.
Air is not pure just because you can see through it. There is a small charge on the contacts, and one side will attract particle out of the air. This will coat gold the same way, if a lot slower, as stuff on my glasses that needs to be washed off. I've sometimes used a soft cloth saturated with alcohol-based eyeglass cleaner to clean contacts. 73, Guy.
