I once spoke to a nationally-known, "Big Gun" contester who felt that the phase noise and key click sidebands generated by his station were an asset because they cleared a "guard band" around his signal since other stations had to stay away. He felt no motivation at all to clean up his signal. I don't know how many other big guns share this philosophy but my acquaintance can't be the only one.
