I have not noticed this problem with my setup. I have the headset plugged in the back. I do have a inline volume control built in to the headset but I think I keep at full volume most of the time to drown out the external speaker.
My only thought is, do you have speakers + phones selected? If not this may reduce the level to each. I have seen external volume control add ons. They may however be stereo 1/8" devices.
