Dick, The easiest way I can give you instructions for getting to the encoder backside is to tell you to follow the dis-assembly instructions in the K3 DSP Low Pass Filter mod kit instructions. You can download from http://www.elecraft.com/K3/mods/K3_DSP_LP_Filter_Install_Rev_A.pdf.
Of course you will not be installing the LPF, so skip that part of the instructions.
