Thanks for the replies, some of them most detailed and helpful. For an unknown reason the K3 began communicating again with the computer and I had made no changes. Restarting the computer 4-5 times and re-trying to communicate did not work. Everything else seemed to work with the computer and with the radio but nothing changed.
FWIW, the K3 software would not connect nor would the Logging software connect. There were no updates recently and I require my approval for any updates (I don't trust Microsoft to always do things in my best interest). As the Edgeport, that might be a perfect solution but at the moment they are $250 and that's too much. Fleabay might bring the right price to me but not today. I'm keeping the many helpful suggestions in a separate file in case this happens again. Thank you all for your replies, I appreciate your time & interest very much.
