I'm a pretty active contester, and I've always used VOX for SSB and all digital modes, including RTTY. Works fine. I use a Yamaha CM500, carefully placing the mic a bit above and to the side of my mouth to avoid breath pops and give me room to slurp coffee while the computer is calling CQ
I use audio editing software to record contest messages, and spend time making them sound as good as I can. On CQs, I add a low level "click" a few msec before the message starts to make sure that the VOX pulls in. I don't need it on a live mic, but it helps on the recording.
