The specific issue with unregulated wall warts includes such things as
unregulated voltage being applied to the load (K3). This goes to such things as
line voltage variations, unloaded to loaded voltage swings, and passing along
nasty little additons including but not limited to surges, short term, but very
dangerous peak voltages. IF you MUST use an unregulated wall wart, then
BEFORE using it to supply power to an expensive piece of equipment, consider
two things. What is the cost of repair/replacement of the item to be
powered.?What is the cost of curing the cause?
Cost of replacement is real easy to figure, take invoice cost, add shipping,
loss of service, price of inconvenience equals answer to first question.Cost of
cure is more complicated but almost as easy to arrive at. Add up cost of decent
regulator, build time, or cost of decent power supply. Usuallycomes out about
the same. But the final question, to me is simple and pretty much
theoretical....Why would someone that just spent what a nice K3 or KX3 or ????
wouldn't spend just a few more $$ on a decent power supply, when they are
readily available?
Have a great day,
