The manual reads that way because we didn't want to imply that you need to do anything at the KAT500 before turning on the K3 other than apply power.

The K3 will initialise properly when using the DB15 cable provided, at the time it is switched on, the KAT500 is connected to a suitable live power supply. The KAT500 does not actually need to be switched on. If both are connected to the same power supply the KAT500 will switch on (with LEDs lit up) automatically when the power supply is switched on. The K3 will then initialise properly when the POWER button is pushed, even if by that time you have switched off the KAT500 (no LEDs lit up). The language of the KAT500 manual is correct if perhaps in need of a little unpacking.
