Hugh - I would have thought the best solution would be to buy the correct 4-pole 3.5mm jack plug. These are a standard item available from all good component suppliers. In the UK we have them at Maplin.co.uk under part number QT65V. Perhaps a search on eBay might bring up a supplier nearer you. Shorting out connections on a jack socket cannot be a good thing by using the wrong sort of plug.
