3 amps would be more than enough to operate.
What I was thinking though was just enough to charge the batteries --
operate on batteries all day, and then plug it in back in the hotel room.
Would half an amp at 14 volts or so do? Does a little ripple (or noise)
matter if you're only charging batteries?

This is a 3A "wall wart", so there should be enough current there to
transmit and charge at the same time if you wanted.
