In a follow-up to my original comment Bob answered off list and I suggested
a ground problem. He replied:

"Ron, you hit the nail on the head. Problem turned out to be old ground
connections at the towers and the ground rod outside the shack. They all
still "looked" good, but I chose to clean and re-tighten them anyway. 
That done, all seems to be fine, now.

What does seem strange is that the K3 was unaffected, but the KPA500 running
only 50 watts would fault (high swr) and shut down.

It does underscore just how rig-specific and installation-specific such
problems can be.
