Gary you should check out and join the North American SOTA forum: http://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/nasota/conversations/topics Search "Alex Loop" there and you'll find this has been discussed extensively by active SOTA operators. My take on it is: 1. It's probably among the most convenient and fastest setup antenna available. 2. It doesn't work as well as full sized antennas such as doublets, linked dipoles, EFHWs, etc. 3. It's performance on 40m may be marginal but OK for local contacts. Performance is better as you go higher in frequency. IMHO the strongest and most consistent signal from the West Coast is from NA6MG (currently has 1436 Activator points and #3 overall in North America).
