Gary,
A stereo to mono adapter will usually not work. If you follow the
diagram for most of those adapters, the result will be the same as using
a mono plug - the ring will still be connected to the sleeve of the mono
plug.
The only real answer is to change the mono plug of your ICOM SP 20 to a
stereo plug with only the tip and the sleeve connected (No connection to
the ring).
