Hi, Joe! I'd recommend a KPA500, a KAT500, one KPAK3AUX cable set, and one E850463 Optional KAT500 to KPA500 Cable.
The KPAK3AUX "cable set" consists of three pieces, a 15-pin cable, a Y, and an little DB-15 M-F coupler with one pin cut that we call a "key line interrupter". You might want more Ys if you have several things that need to go to the K3 ACC connector. I use two Ys for three 15-pin uses, amp/ATU, antenna switch, FSK/PTT to an interface box. The 15-pin cable from the KPAK3AUX "cable assembly" goes from K3 to KAT500. The E850463 15-pin cable goes from KAT500 to KPA500. And you'll need a few coax jumpers, K3 to KPA500 RF input, KPA500 RF output to KAT500 XMTR, and then your existing antenna goes into one of the KAT500 ANT connectors. The picture you need is in the KAT500 owner's manual, Figure 1. If you have a SteppIR controller that needs to also be able to interrupt the amplifier key line, then you need the Figure 2 diagram. The hobby is called "wireless"... 73 de Dick, K6KR -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Joseph Carter Sent: Sunday, January 12, 2014 2:04 PM To: Elecraft Subject: [Elecraft] KPA500 and KAT500, befuddlement re: cables After 45+ years as a ham I am contemplating adding an amplifier - a KPA500 and KAT500 to complement my precious K3 and P3. I have downloaded both manuals and it must be my age catching up with me - I am flummoxed by trying to figure out the cables I need. If I understand it, I will need the cable that comes with the KPA500 and the "KPAK3AUX" while not necessary allows complete integration with the K3. What confuses me is what cables I need to order with the KAT500 - I see "E850863" and "E180980" cables. Obviously, I want to just place one order and make sure I have all I need but don't want to order anything I don't. I seem to recall a number of issues discussed on the reflector - did a search of the archives but still don't understand - especially about the "Y" cable. Love my K3, P3, and KX3 and all I have learned from the group here. Thanks es 73, de Joe, w9jc ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[email protected] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[email protected] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
