Bob,
Try inserting the headphone plug and removing it several times (with the
SPKR+ PH menu set to NO).
The wiping action of the contacts on the headphone jack may restore
proper speaker response.
Further explanation - if you normally use headphones, oxidation can
occur on the contact points of the headphone jack. Insertion and
removal of the headphone plug should create a 'wiping' action on the
contacts that should wipe away that oxidation. It may take several
"wipes" to remove the oxidation, so exercise it a bit before declaring
that the headphone jack is "dead".

After working just fine (no phones plugged in==> speaker on, phones plugged

output.
I immediately checked the SPKR+PH setting, usually set to "no", and
adjusted it to "yes". At that point I have output from the speakers. So
there doesn't appear to be anything wrong in the audio chain.
I presume whatever mechanical part of the PHONES jack that senses the
headphones are plugged in has failed. But I thought I would check to see
if anyone had similar issues with a different cause in the past?
My K3 is about 2 years old at this point, so fairly "low mileage"
