I had this problem several months ago. It turns out the mic connector ground (both mic and PTT) goes thru a 0 ohm surface mount resistor (at one time this was a choke, I believe). I bridged this component and the problem went away. I believe the board flexes too much when the mic is plugged in, and this leads to failure of the resistor.
