I also have had no real issues other than minor cockpit errors learning
a few different things. Moving from Win 7 to Win 8 was almost
transparent. You can run virtually any Win 7 program without issue, and
run it from the Win 7 desktop without even dealing with anything Win 8.
A few programs I had on my XP machine required driver updates. No big
deal at all.
I can't thing of a single ham related program that I use that doesn't
work, even the LADPACK programs from the EMRFD disk.
The big surprise was updating my little Dell XP netbook with only 1 gb
of memory to Win 8. It transformed that computer. Many programs run
faster now than they did under XP. Some that would not run well under XP
are now completely usable. I've heard that Win 8 is much more efficient
managing memory. I can believe that.
I also have never had a blue screen or anything remotely close to it.
Win 7 and 8 are both very stable for me.

Hi David and the group
I have run XP, Windows 7, Windows 8 and now Windows 8.1 since each system came
out. There were some growing pains moving from from Windows XP to Windows 7 and
again to Windows 8 as the procedures changed from what we were used to. I had
to upgrade MIXW but now Windows 8 and 8.1 have been out long enough that most
programs are all set for it. I have found the Windows 8.1 and 8 to be much more
stable. I can not remember the last time I had a blue screen of death. I have
been in the NAQP contest this week end with ROCKY 1.7, MIXW, MMTTY and N3FJP
all running at the same time hooked to my KX3/KXPA100 with no problems of any
kind. I remember my first contest on RTTY 8 years ago and this is sure a great
improvement. I am also volunteering for AARP tax help and have done 35 tax
returns so far this year plus the classes on line to prepare for the season all
with no problems.
My advice is pick the system you want and learn how to use it. Windows 7, 8 and
8.1 are all well supported. XP works well but will not be supported which means
software in the future may not run on it and of course virus protection will no
longer be updated.

I recall posts on this list about issues with Win 8
What do I have to watch out for if I switch to Win 8? Will all the Elecraft
programs work? Any of the common digital or logging programs not work? Any
special things I need to do to make them work? Or should I downgrade it to Win
7?
I would gladly search the archive but what keywords would dig this information
out? Any good sites and lists for these questions?
