The big surprise was updating my little Dell XP
netbook with only 1 gb of memory to Win 8. It
transformed that computer. Many programs run
faster now than they did under XP. Some that
would not run well under XP are now completely
usable. I've heard that Win 8 is much more
efficient managing memory. I can believe that.
I picked up an HP computer at Amazon of netbook
ilk: 1 GHz processor, 2 GB RAM, 320 GB HDD, 10.6
inch screen for $280, Eric. It came with Win 8.1
and I added a shell program to make it look like
Win 7. I mainly use MacBooks these days (and they
do have dual boot, Win7 & OS X 10.9.1/2,
capability). But I wanted something small for the
operating position: a 15" screen obscures my
transceivers. At the price I'm very pleased with
the HP; even has a USB3 port, important because my
primary machine (13" MB Air) and production
machine (Dell Win 7 PC with 6 TB of hard drives
and very fast burners) both have USB3.
I've been pleasantly surprised by Win 8.1, now
that I have it booting to the desktop! And for
realy weirdness, it even has a touch screen.
