I do a lot of shipping, and here is what I have found...
For most domestic orders we ship using Priority Mail. They deliver 6
days a week to almost everywhere, including PO boxes. They provide
tracking and some level of insurance, and you can increase the insurance
for low cost.
For higher value domestic packages we tend to use Fedex Ground. Usually
a day or two slower, but better tracking and I feel better about the
insurance process. When I need faster, I find 2-day service to be a
reasonable cost.
For international we almost always use USPS Priority or Priority Express
Mail. Exceptions include large packages. Fedex has a special program
that gives ~70% discounts for international packages over 10 lbs.
One note about reliability. I find both to be extremely reliable. We
have never lost a package in the US, and only a couple out of thousands
internationally. There are several countries where theft is an issue,
but for the most part they are all quite good.
I don't use UPS for outgoing shipments, but I use them for incoming
because they get here earlier in the day.

USPS Priority Mail delivers to any address in the US six days a week
and retail prices are generally 15 to 20% less expensive than UPS Brown
(Ground).
