I'm a big fan of open-source software but, as a software developer/supervisor with more than 30 years experience, I think it's worthwhile to know the big picture before messing with software that another developer wrote.
Sometimes it's not obvious why a segment of code exists.

And yes, I've rewritten others' software before, because it was easier to do that than to try to maintain it.
